It seems as if everybody's got a design philosophy. At Nightship
Networks, we have pared it down to a few basic concepts to which we
adhere: |
|
Fuctionality
First and foremost, graphics and site design must work. Obvious
statement, but it's amazing how easy it is to forget. In the
high-tech, high-excitement environment of the world wide web, things
that blink and buzz and create visual or audio thrills can be
dangerously alluring. The application must be suitable to the client
needs, easy to understand, easy to use, and fully functional.
Simplicity
Every company that publishes to the web should start with an idea of
the message they wish to transmit. The Internet is, at its most
basic level, a communications tool. Visual effects, interactive
elements, and other exciting options available on the 'net are best
used as supporting elements, not the main event. Always remember the
basic message. If it's getting lost under layers of bells and
whistles, then the investment is in danger of being wasted.
Appeal
Does it suit the business? Does it 'feel' right? Will your customer
like it? (More importantly, will your customer use it?) Visual
appeal, functional appeal. Make it easy, and make it appropriate to
the client's approach. Ultimately, what the design house likes best
isn't really the issue. It's what the client needs that counts.
