Breaking Into the World Wide Web

Part I: In-House or Outsource?

Resources

The World Wide Web is by far the most accessible marketplace ever seen. A website can be an incredibly powerful tool in reaching and expanding new audiences and markets. It takes minimal expense to create and maintain, and can deliver immediate, positive results in terms of sales and profits. Enhanced customer or member service, increased revenues, and a vastly broader customer base are just a few of the potential results of a web presence. On the flip side, the technical aspects of establishing a website can appear intimidating and overwhelming. The acquisition of technical resources and hiring or training personnel for website maintenance are potentially costly and prohibitive.

A new industry has developed in recent years specifically to meet the needs of businesses which are making the move to the Web, but do not have the resources to establish and maintain a web presence on their own. When a company decides to establish a web presence, one of the first and most critical decisions is whether to outsource the web hosting and maintenance or manage it internally. More and more companies are choosing to leave web hosting to the experts. The most commonly listed reasons are cost savings and access to expert technical resources.
