Breaking Into the World Wide Web

Part II: What to Look for in a Web Host Service

Resources

When a company decides to go online, the choices to be made are a little overwhelming. Particularly for those who may be less-than-intimately familiar with the technical inner-workings of the World Wide Web, knowing which questions to ask is probably even more difficult to figure out than which answers are best.

What is a Web Host Service? A web hosting service is a third-party company which provides and maintains the actual computers on which websites reside. The computers are accessed from the Web via a pipeline connection, a direct link to the Internet. Web surfers locate these websites by the use of the URL (Uniform Resource Locator, also called a "website address" e.g. www.somecompany.com) which calls up the IP (Internet Protocol) address, something like translating a name into a phone number. The files making up the website, which reside on the host's server, or computer, are then displayed on the surfer's computer screen.
